Tess Torrey ’68 to Support Future Students with Estate-Plan IRA Gift
Tess McGuinness Torrey ’68 lived in Upstate New York until her family moved to Ohio when she was 9. Traveling back east to visit family awakened an interest in her to explore new places and meet new people. When Dominican nuns at her high school told her about a college in Connecticut, “that sounded to me like a great plan and a grand adventure,” she says.
As part of her estate plan, Tess has made the College a beneficiary of an IRA. “I received a full tuition scholarship to attend Albertus, which provided my parents the added resource to finance my attending college so far from home,” she says. “I did well in my career, due in no small part to the learning skills I developed from a liberal arts education. I want to extend to others the same helping hand that was offered to me.”
At Albertus, Tess developed the skills for lifelong learning. “I was taught to read and think critically, to write clearly, to set goals, and to manage my time,” she says. “I graduated equipped with tools needed for a life of adventure and an appreciation of the rewards of always staying curious in mind and spirit.”
Tess encourages others to consider the legacies they could leave to support future Falcons. “I hope this gift can provide others—especially other first-generation students, as I was—some financial support to pursue their dreams, discover and nurture their unique skills, and confidently move forward to fulfill the inborn destiny I believe each of us brings into this world.”
